Home has old electric baseboard heat and uses window units for AC. It is a 1985 build cape cod with 1.5 stories. Needs new heating and cooling system. No access to natural gas. It all depends on what features you want on your system.
1. The first thing that I would do is contract a reputable American Standard dealer. This is the best equipment on the market today.
2. The next thing that you need to do is have that contractor come in and do a complete manual J load calculation on the entire space. Make sure they measure all windows and doors and take in to consideration the insulation values of attic, wall ,and floors.
3. Efficency is very important, especially with today's fuel costs. A few things that will help you get the most of your system. (1) Demand that the ductwork be COMPLETLY sealed, and check behind them. (2) Make sure that they use dampers on all supply lines. otherwise your system will never be properly balanced, and you could have hot and cold rooms. (3) With new systems one return is rarely enough. make sure there is enough return.
These are just a few things to remember when deciding on your system. If you do not install american standard equipment, the other things I mentioned are vital to proper system operation. If The contractor will not do these things, do not use them.

A/C w/ furnace and duct work: 4-7 thousand dollars
You can add Accu-clean + $1,000
You can add Variable speed + $1,500
