Instead of buying our Oil from the OPEC people - why don't we just start importing it?

Iraq has a lot of oil, which Saddam was very eager to get on the market. He was signing contracts left and right 鈥?just not with our oil companies. It is interesting that since the invasion, very little of Iraq鈥檚 vast supplies have reached the market and oil prices are so high.Instead of buying our Oil from the OPEC people - why don't we just start importing it?
Where to start?





1. That's theft. It's not a nice thing to steal oil from other people. Try explaining that one to God when you're called to judgement.





2. It'd irritate evereyone. Allies and Iraqis both would be outraged and turn against us. Foreign armies would pull out of Iraq, Osama would have a new rallying cry, and suicide attacks and other assorted bombings in Iraq would go up exponentially.
We can't just steal it, and the idea of getting oil on the cheap from them takes place through the Iraqi Oil Law. One of the terms of that law is that Iraq decides who gets their oil, and it has lucrative terms for companies that get contracts for oil, but Iraq decides who gets it and so far they haven't picked us... yet.
Where do you suggest we import it from? South American sources are unstable. Russia has limited supply, and large demand from the world. OPEC is a union of the largest oil producing companies.





We don't want to build oil well's in our state parks, or off our coasts. Look at the outrage from residents of Martha's Vineyard when Wind Mills for electricity were going to be put in the ocean. They did not want to mess up their ocean view while they sat on the beach. Did not matter if it would benefit the economy.
Iraq produces a less than reliable 2,000,000 barrels of oil daily at peak production which she has not seen in decades.


We get most of our oil from non-Opec Canada and Mexico with a lot coming from Nigeria etc.
Actually most of out oil doesn't come from OPEC. (If any)


It comes from Canada and South America.
Pipe dream. Plus, the majority of our oil is not imported from OPEC. Canada and Mexico top that list.

That was Bush's plan until the libs started mouthing off about taking spoils from war. How barbaric, they said. Perhaps Obama or Hillary will be the ';spoiler?';
because the goverment of Iraq has not granted us an oil contract
We but very little oil from OPEC as it is. I highly doubt it would be a good idea to steal oil from the Iraqi people..

Why don't we just say that OPEC are a bunch of terrorist...
That would be stealing. Iraq should repay us for the expense of freeing them.





One better: drill on American soil. There is plenty here.
